Kaneohe, Hawaii Map

The History of Hawaii’s Kaneohe and the Kamehameha Canoe Landing. Kaneohe is located in the highly populated Oahu area. It has traditionally been a fishing village and became a popular resort destination in the early 20th century with the construction of hotels, golf courses, and other attractions. Its moniker as “The Valley Isle” was coined in 1848 by Charles Reed Bishop, who built a homestead there. In ancient times, the low-lying areas of Kaneohe were used for fish ponds by ancient Hawaiians. Today, it remains one of the most popular tourist destinations on Oahu with its high level of accessibility from Honolulu via freeway (H1), rail station (Kaneohe Station), airport (Kaneohe Airport) and cruise ship terminal (Kaneohe Bay Cruise Terminal). As such it serves as an oasis within an otherwise dense urbanized area.
